Entrance Examinations (Union State Exam) — Master’s exam in SUSU, includes 3 stages: common cultural competence test, general professional competence test, department’s exam. Department’s exam includes a theoretical linguistics knowledge test and a test for practical translation skills (written part – text translation from English into Russian with a commentary, oral part – Russian-English and English-Russian interpretation).

The purpose of the program is theoretical training and improvement of professional skills of interpretation and translation. The program focuses on five European languages — English (basic), German, Spanish, Italian and French. The theoretical aspect of the program is based on the systemic representation of the general and special theories of translation; practical component focuses on the development of technologies of translation, peculiar features of translation in various fields.

Students study pedagogy of higher school, history of language studies, first and second foreign languages, business foreign language, actual problems of translation theory, history of translation science, translation and interpretation ethics, intercultural communication, socio-political interpretation, two-way translation and interpretation (the first and second foreign languages).

Master’s professional skills are useful in the field of Philology and Arts, linguistic, interpersonal or intercultural communication, education at various levels, culture and management. After completion of the education Master is able to solve the following tasks: Applied activity: qualified translation of different types of texts with necessary editor’s or publisher’s comments and scholarly apparatus; qualified synchronous or consecutive interpretational support of international forums or negotiations; international delegations visits support, interpretations in the embassies, diplomatic missions, Russian and international organizations and establishments. Organizational management activity: organization of translation support of various talks, consultations, business negotiations.

Project activity: projects development in the sphere of intercultural communication, international conversations, speech ethics in polycultural environment. Educational work: preparing the teaching and learning aids for translation disciplines, qualified interpretation and translation of various texts for supporting teaching and popularization of linguistic and translation knowledge; providing practical courses of foreign language in education institutions of different level.

Research activity: independent updating, critical analysis and applying theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of linguistics and translation for own scientific research; studying oral and written communication with rendering reasonable conclusions; qualified analysis, annotation, rendering and generalization of scientific research results, performed by other specialists; participation as a team member of scientific groups, studying wide philological problems; preparing and editing scientific publications.

A master is able to work in embassies, institutions of local government, international organizations, travel agencies, translation agencies, universities and colleges, schools, in business, in industrial companies which provide for intercultural dialogue.

Graduates may continue studying in a postgraduate school.
