Entrance Examinations (Union State Exam) — Master’s exam in SUSU, includes 3 stages: common cultural competence test, general professional competence test, department’s exam. Department’s exam includes a theoretical linguistics knowledge test and a test for practical translation skills (written part – text translation from English into Russian with a commentary, oral part – Russian-English and English-Russian interpretation).

The purpose of the program is theoretical training and improvement of professional skills of interpretation and translation. The program focuses on five European languages — English (basic), German, Spanish, Italian and French. The theoretical aspect of the program is based on the systemic representation of the general and special theories of translation; practical component focuses on the development of technologies of translation, peculiar features of translation in various fields.

Master’s professional skills are useful in the field of Philology and Arts, linguistic, interpersonal or intercultural communication, education at various levels, culture and management. After completion of the education Master is able to solve the following tasks: Applied activity: qualified translation of different types of texts with necessary editor’s or publisher’s comments and scholarly apparatus; qualified synchronous or consecutive interpretational support of international forums or negotiations; international delegations visits support, interpretations in the embassies, diplomatic missions, Russian and international organizations and establishments. Organizational management activity: organization of translation support of various talks, consultations, business negotiations.

Project activity: projects development in the sphere of intercultural communication, international conversations, speech ethics in polycultural environment. Educational work: preparing the teaching and learning aids for translation disciplines, qualified interpretation and translation of various texts for supporting teaching and popularization of linguistic and translation knowledge; providing practical courses of foreign language in education institutions of different level.

A master is able to work in embassies, institutions of local government, international organizations, travel agencies, translation agencies, universities and colleges, schools, in business, in industrial companies which provide for intercultural dialogue.

Graduates may continue studying in a postgraduate school.

Entrance Examination: exam in theory and practical usage of languages (includes a theoretical question and a practical question in native/foreign language) – written part – text translation from English into Russian with a commentary, oral part – Russian-English and English-Russian interpretation.

Languages (domestic and foreign) in their theoretical, practical, synchronic, diachronic, sociocultural and dialectological aspects; Fiction literature (domestic and foreign), and folklore in their historical and theoretical aspects, based on the laws of existence in various countries and regions; Various types of texts - written, oral and virtual (including hypertexts and text elements in multimedia objects); Oral and written communication.

Professional activity for masters in the specialty 032700 Philology is implemented in the sphere of philology and humanities, language, interpersonal and intercultural communication, education, culture and management

Graduate must possess the following cultural competences:

• The ability to improve and develop their intellectual and cultural level;
• The ability to independently learn new research methods and change the scientific and scientific-production profile of their professional activity;
• Fluency in Russian and foreign languages as means of business communication;
• The ability to take initiative, including risky situations, and responsibility for their own decisions;
• The ability to independently gain new knowledge and abilities with the help of IT, including new fields of knowledge that are not related directly to the scope of activities, and use them in practice;
• The ability to generate new ideas (creativity), to adapt to new situations, to revaluate the existing experience and analyze their abilities.

General: The ability to show their knowledge of modern scientific paradigm in the field of Philology and the dynamics of its development, of the system of methodological principles and methodical techniques of philological research work; The ability to show deeper knowledge of specific field of Philology; Awareness of certain communicative strategies and tactical methods, rhetorical, stylistic and linguistic rules and techniques, common for different spheres of communication, the ability to use them adequately in order to solve certain professional questions and tasks; According to the kinds of activity stated in Master’s degree Main Educational Program:

Scientific activities: The ability to independently gain, analyze and apply new theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of philology and humanities in the course of research work; The ability to independently study the system of language and the basic laws of functioning of folklore and literature in the synchronic and diachronic aspects; to study oral and written communication presenting reasoned conclusions; Skills of expert analysis, annotation, abstracting and generalizing the results of research conducted by other specialists, using modern techniques and methodologies, advanced domestic and foreign experience; Skills of teamwork in research teams working on broad philological issues; of preparation and editing scientific publications;

Teaching activities: Skills in qualified interpretation of various types of texts, including the disclosure of their meaning and their connection to their era, analysis of linguistic and literary material for teaching and promotion of philological knowledge; Skills in conducting classes and extracurricular activities on language and literature in the institutions of general and specialized secondary education; practical training in philological disciplines in educational institutions of higher education; Skills in preparing teaching materials for specific philological subjects; The ability to prepare study guides and organize career guidance;

Applied activities:

The ability to write, edit, abstract and systematize all types of texts in official-business and publicistic style;

The ability to transform different types of texts (change style, genre, purpose of a text); Graduate must be ready to plan and implement public speeches with the use of oratory skills; Skills of a qualified simultaneous or sequential translation of international forums and negotiations;

Project activities:

The ability to build predictive scenarios and models of development of communicative and socio-cultural situations; Knowledge of theory and practical skills in design, building, modeling the structure and content of the educational process in the field of philology; The ability and willingness to participate in the development of scientific, social, educational, creative, advertising, publishing and other projects;

Organizational and administrative activity:

The ability to plan complex information influence and use it in management; The ability to organize and conduct theoretical and practical lessons, seminars, scientific conferences and debates; Skills in organization and management of research and production work for solving specific tasks in accordance with the profile of the master's program.
